State of the Giants

The special teams have been OK this year, but you would think they would be really good being Judge's specialty. Also, they seem to have devoted a lot of players just to play special teams.
Yeah, that's been a big disappointment for sure. Dare I say the units have been slightly worse since Judge arrived.

Good thing Ronnie Barnes has shut down Daniel Jones for the season.
It's very frustrating as a fan how Judge answers questions about player injuries. If they play bad, you don't know if it's the injury or they just haven't played well. It's not fair to the player or fan.

It seems like John Mara may have backed himself into a corner recently. He gave Judge a vote of confidence, but when asked about Gettleman he said no comment. It’s a complicated situation with no easy answers IMHO if Gettleman retires this year then the Giants should go outside the organization for a young up and coming GM. Then the question becomes what happens to Judge. A really good new GM may want his own coach which may not be the worst thing for the Giants and Judge. Then you have the salary cap mess for next year. All factors to take into consideration in hiring that GM.

If John Mara and Steve Tisch decide to go with for a young up and coming GM, then he should have the ability to hire a new coach if that’s what he decides. A rebuild should start with which players are keepers and which need to go. There should be a forward-looking plan to rebuild through the draft. I could see the Giants back winning in two to three years with a rebuild from top to bottom.

Option two if the Giants want to keep Judge as H/C on for next year then maybe keep Gettleman on for another season for several reasons. This is going to be critical year not only for Daniel Jones, but the enter Giants organization.

What do you think about how the Giants should proceed next year?

The Giants are at inflection point. John Mara and Steve Tisch have some big decisions to make in next few weeks. They have to get the Giants back on track to playing winning football.

For sure. It's a shame. I don't know how you build a good team without good players getting a second contract. Just to name a few Tomlinson and Hill.

I happen to be a big believer in the Giants signing their own players to 2nd contracts rather than signing expensive free agents. There's usually a reason they became free agents. If you draft right why not invest in your own players if you can.

Pat has excellent article " Joe Schoen Outlines Criteria for next Giants Head Coach"

This topic IMHO is so very important I decided to make its own thread.

I suppose the cap dictates that not every player can be offered a 2nd contract. Choices have to be made. Franchise QB, shut down corner, Double Digit sack edge rusher, and left tackle should take precedence. After that, cap considerations have to set in.

I think the GM and head coach have to determine their needs. What's available in the draft. Which free agents are going to be available and what's their asking price. Then you need to make plan as to how construct your roster. You're not going to be able keep every player whose contract is up. I would prefer the Giants sign their own players who have been in the same system, and you know what you have rather than expensive free agents. JMHO!

Last year could have been a case study on what not to do in signing free agents. JAT

I don't know. Seems like too little too late.
Very happy to see Lorenzo Carter Get some love from Pro Football Focus. BTW nice article Pat! Before Carter injured his Achillies Tendon in 2020. He looked like a player who was going to have a big year. IMHO, he deserves a nice prove it one year contract. It would be shame if he went to another team had a monster year and the Giants are still looking for edge rushers.

We have to take a realistic approach with our qb situation and find someone who can be counted on and even after that have a suitable back up who is more than a clipboard holder and can run the basic game plan designed for the starter. Although this may be harsh, I think finding a back up except for a rookie who isnt better than Jones might be a problem

Agreed. Finding a good back up QB may be hard with the cap hell the Giants are in though.
