State of the Giants

Well yesterday it got late early. Today John Mara has to really think about the State of the Giants.
A 3-4 win season is certainly very possible. What does he do this year and after the season ends?

Yesterday it got dark early! This will be the 5th year in a row where the Giants record will not be over .500 at the half way point of the season.

As each week passes John Mara has to realize that 3-4 win season becomes more of a reality. Giants fans deserve better. No sugar coating it. Since the beginning of the 2017 NFL season the Giants have had the worst record in the NFL. Can't write this season off to injuries. If anything he should want to know why those injuries happened. Can't blame the O-Line as it wasn't addressed in free agency or the draft.
He also needs to ask himself another question. The Giants will probably have two top ten picks in 2022 NFL draft. Are his current Head Coach and GM the right people to make those picks.
Whatever John Mara decides I hope it will restore "Giants Pride". Giant fans have waited long enough and deserve it.

Dave Gettleman has now had four drafts to right the ship. Judge was involved with two drafts. How did these drafts work out? Can't blame Jerry Reese now for a lack of talent. If this season goes south fast and continues to go south then I think maybe Gettleman and possibly Judge may be out at the end of the season. I think with the right GM turning the Giants around shouldn't take that long. The biggest problem will be the salary cap hits in 2022 and 2023. What do you think?
Experts generally say it takes three years instead of 3 minutes to evaluate a draft class. Looking back at evaluating 2018 draft now is painful. Giants were in prime position to turn it into a great draft. Gettleman was so confident that he had the right player to lead the Giants. He said he wouldn't even listen to trade offers because he had his gold jacket player in Saquon Barkley. Confidence is good, but arrogance may lead to big mistakes. Looking back at the 2018 draft class it now looks like a large swing and a miss. The 2019 draft class looks like another year of lost opportunities. Josh Allen was available with the 6th pick in the 1st round. Most experts had the Giants taking Allen. Instead Gettleman took Jones. He had the 17th pick in the 1st round which he probably could have drafted Jones with that pick. Instead he drafted Dexy Lawrence a run stuffing DT. The pick made no sense to me as in 2018 he drafted BJ Hill and had Delvin Tomlinson DT on the roster already. To cap off the 1st round he gave up 3 picks to get back into the 1st round to draft Deandre Baker CB. How well did that trade work out. Had he picked Josh Allen with the 6th pick the Giants would have gotten a franchise edge rusher. As they say you can never have too many pass rushers. Gettleman probably could have moved up a few spots from the 17 pick and still drafted Daniel Jones. If Daniel Jones, for whatever reason, does not turn out to be the franchise QB it will another tremendous waste of a significant amount of draft capital. It will be another wasted opportunity to build the Giants roster. He did come out with two role players Julian Love and Darius Slayton. In the 4th and 5th rounds.

As for the 2020 & 2021 drafts picks I have no idea how those draft picks will workout.
Swinging and missing big time in two drafts can really set a franchise back for many years.
Any thoughts?

It seems like John Mara may have backed himself into a corner recently. He gave Judge a vote of confidence, but when asked about Gettleman he said no comment. It’s a complicated situation with no easy answers IMHO if Gettleman retires this year then the Giants should go outside the organization for a young up and coming GM. Then the question becomes what happens to Judge. A really good new GM may want his own coach which may not be the worst thing for the Giants and Judge. Then you have the salary cap mess for next year. All factors to take into consideration in hiring that GM.

If John Mara and Steve Tisch decide to go with for a young up and coming GM, then he should have the ability to hire a new coach if that’s what he decides. A rebuild should start with which players are keepers and which need to go. There should be a forward-looking plan to rebuild through the draft. I could see the Giants back winning in two to three years with a rebuild from top to bottom.

Option two if the Giants want to keep Judge as H/C on for next year then maybe keep Gettleman on for another season for several reasons. This is going to be critical year not only for Daniel Jones, but the enter Giants organization.

What do you think about how the Giants should proceed next year?

The Giants spent so money money on free agents this year. To me you build a team through the draft. Fill in holes you couldn't address through the draft with reasonably priced free agents. I have often wondered if the Giants finishing 5-3 last year led to this year's crop of free agent signings?

Any thoughts

Today a win is a win. It's a shame that Kenny Goliday, Kadarius Tony and Kyle Rudolph have missed so much time due to injuries. They were supposed to be Daniel Jones' weapons this year. Today you could see the timing between Jones and Goliday was a work in progress. Lack of reps really showed.

The interior of the offensive line will probably be a problem for the remainder of this season. Jones make some really good throws under extreme pressure.
