State of Giants Offensive Line

Anyone have any information when Ben Bredeson is expect back. He was highly rated as a guard coming out of college. Injuries are top secret with Judge. If they could work him into a guard position that would be good. Maybe move Skura to center. Center is his more natural position. May as well play the kids. See what they have for next year.

She didn't forget.:) Thank you for a great series of articles "How History Has Repeated Itself in the Giants’ Roster Building Process" It's in the Big Blue+ section. Another most read! Looking forward to reading part 3.
Part 3 was excellent. Great points. I had a feeling that Jerry Reese may have relied on some of draft people more than he should have. Gettleman I am not sure about him. He seemed overconfident in his abilities to recognize talent and overvalued talent which lead to missed opportunities. The ironic thing is Gettleman signed Andrew Norwell as a free agent but refused to sign with the Giants.
Both Reese & Gettleman wanted the best for the Giants, but unfortunately it didn't translate to wins.

As for George Young he could recognize talent. The Gary Zimmerman trade to Denver set the Giants up for the 86 & 90 Super Bowls. . Personally I think there was mutual respect between Young and Parcells. Parcells knew Young was trying to draft the best players and it was Parcells job to make it work. Example when Young drafted Eric Moore and Jumbo Elliot in the 1st and 2nd rounds respectively. Then Parcells figured out Jumbo and not Moore was his left tackle with the Giants. No GM hits on all his picks. That's why I believe you can't have enough draft picks each year to fill out a roster.

According to an article I read this week Will Hernandez is the only offensive player to have play every offensive snap this season. Booker last Sunday ran mostly to the right side of Giants line behind Hernandez, Solder and Rudolph. PFF graded the three lineman really well in the run game.
They've also used an increase of heavy personnel to help the run blocking.

I hope they go with heavy packages Monday Night against Tampa Bay. Helps protect Daniel Jones and helps with the run game. It might make sense to have Elijhaa Penny in the back field sometimes to help out the interior of the offensive line. Maybe Judge can use Penny on 3rd and 1 instead Daniel Jones running QB sneaks. Judge has to coach to win and the players really need to show up or it can get ugly.
BTW does anyone know why Nate Ebner is on the team?
.

Daniel Jones was pressured 50% of the time when he went back to pass against Tampa Bay. That said
it's been great to see Andrew Thomas' development this year. Not sure why Matt Preat is not starting at RT
instead of Nate Solder. He could be getting valuable experience for next year.

Patricia has an excellent article in Big Blue Plus about Judge defending the Giants current version of the offensive line. Must read!

Per Judge:

"I like the way our offensive line is moving," Judge said. "They're working together, playing as a unit, and I've seen a lot of progress throughout the year. I love the job Rob and the offensive line guys are doing."

Maybe having too many guys working with the offensive line is part of the problem. I would think it might cause confusion.

" I like the way these guys have battled throughout a lot of different moving parts. They play for each other. They have a good attitude, you know. They know how to block out the noise and play for one another. I'm very proud of that unit."

As a fan I have no idea what he's talking about. The offensive line allowed Jones to be pressured on 55% of his drop backs and he thinks that fine. Was he watching the game and seeing Jones being under heavy pressure all night? Playing hard and having a good attitude is are excellent traits. Having players with talent and ability as offensive lineman are two different things. As for them playing for each other, I don't get that either?

Has reality set in with the Giants about the state of their offensive line? We heard from Dave Gettlemen that the kids were young strong and would be fine. He wasn’t concerned about the that O- Line play being a problem. Jason Garret said yesterday the O-Line would be just fine.

Dave Gettlemen was so confident as a result the Giants didn’t draft an offensive lineman in this year’s draft, nor did they sign a veteran free agent prior to the draft. Now it looks like reality may have set in. The O-Line seems to have serious issues and with no easy solutions in sight with one week to go before they face Von Miller and Bradley Chubb.

Gil Brandt a HOF exec for the Cowboys said it wouldn’t matter how many weapons the Giants got for Daniel Jones if the O- Line play didn’t improve.

The Giants spent $150 million dollars on free agents but no help for the O- Line. This will not help Daniel Jones growth or the evaluation to determine if he’s their franchise QB. The Giants effectively put themselves in cap hell for 2022 and probably 2023. Was it worth it and can they fix the O- Line to get the most out of the assets on offense?

First the oline needs an experienced competent coach, something that has been lacking for quite awhile. We have to stop penciling in players like LeMieux and Peart ,Hernandez and Solder crossing our fingers they will get better during the offseason...they wont , and we wont and they need to be backups and the best

Plain and simple we need to hit on these draft picks this year. Drafting a tackle and and center that can start day one is crucial. We can slide Gates to Guard and sign a affordable free agent. If that doesn't happen I don't see how it can get better, we are screwed with money so signing the best available is not an option. Keep your fingers crossed bc we really need this to work out.

According to overthecap.com the Giants have about $4 Million of cap space in 2022. I am not a cap expert, but it seems like the cap charges from the 2020 & 2021 free agent signings are coming due in 2022. According to overthecap.com 7 players in 2022 will take up approximately $123 million of cap space.
I've been saying all year that this year's cap is going to be a mess. And it will be.

Wishful thinkinh Tony but I doubt anytime soon Gates will be cleared to practice again if ever, hes had some career ending injuries.I think if we let Bradberry walk and sign Sauce Gardner to replace him on rookie contract the cap savings can be used for a vet olineman

I have questions about Gates being ready for the start of 2022 as well. He had a wicked injury there--think on the same level as Rich Seubert's. And it took Seubert almost two years to come back from that as I recall and he was never the same.

The Chiefs rebuilt their offensive line in one off season. With the right new GM and HC maybe, the Giants can really improve the offensive line. Giants have LT Andrew Thomas and LG Ben Bredeson. Bederson was highly rated coming out of college. With drafting a few good O-Lineman (Center) and signing a few Vets on the prove it deals they may just do it.

Bredeson couldn't get on the field when healthy so, there's that.

I didn't say he was Quinten Nelson. I think he has potential and he's signed for next year.
Last year was only his second year in the NFL after an outstanding career at Michigan.
As for healthy he had a hand injury for a good portion of the season. I wonder if playing on such a poor line affected his play.

I would say considering he couldn't t into the lineup when he was healthy, that was very telling.
