Joe Schoen Outlines Criteria for next Giants Head Coach

Pat has excellent article " Joe Schoen Outlines Criteria for next Giants Head Coach" in reading the article Schoen's criteria IMHO is what's needed in a coach for the modern NFL. The type of forward thinking head coach with a shared vision who will work with Schoen to build the Giants back up to a winning football team.

My concerns are twofold. Have any of the coaches who have interviewed and Brian Flores who will interview today have what it takes to implement that type of vision. Also, can Giants Ownership really accept and embrace those kinds of changes.

What do you think? Can those changes be made?

The hiring of the head coach will be huge in regards to the "autonomy" Schoen has to do his job.

Let's say he wants Daboll and ownership wants Flores. Does he "win" the room? If not, are we looking at Gettlemen 2.0?

You nailed it! Thank you for sharing your comments. That's been my biggest concern. The impression I originally got was Schoen was going to recommend who he wanted to hire as head coach. Unless it was a completely unacceptable choice Shoen would get the coach he wanted.

Now it came out that John Mara contacted Flores before Shoen was even hired. If that's true than that's a problem. It seems to me that Flores is the polar opposite of what Shoen's criteria for head coach. It's been reported if true, in Flores 3 seasons with the Dolphins he had, 3 different offensive coordinators, two defensive coordinators, and 4 offensive line coaches, with one fired days into training camp. It was also reported that he had dust ups with Grier the GM which ultimately led to his firing.

Your right it has the potential to be Gettleman to 2.0, but IMHO would be huge mistake on Mara's part.

There is another factor at play. I would think Steve Tisch would have a say in who gets hired.

He contacted both Quinn and Flores before the GM was hired because they were both on all three GM finalist short lists for HC. Makes sense to me.

Not sure if there was a short list of three GM finalist. If there was Schoen was certainly on it. John Mara had to have known what Schoen was looking for in a head coach. Flores seems like the polar opposite of what Shoen's criteria for head coach is.

Just a guess based on reading some tea leaves. The next coach of the NY Giants will be Brian Flores.
I just have feeling, nothing more, that John Mara will get his head coach. I hope I am wrong, but I think its Flores.

If the Giants wanted sign Doball I think it would have happened already.

Not necessarily. I think that the Giants are being respectful to the process and to Brian Flores by giving him a chance to interview.

What would you think if the Giants hired Brian Flores as head coach?
Would he be the right guy for NY Giants?
The 4 teams remaining in the playoffs have very smart, offensive-minded coaches. You really can't win big in this league unless you can put up the points with the big boys. As we have just witnessed the last couple of seasons, the Giants have significant offensive pieces and desperately need someone to put them together.
My hunch is Daboll.

Thank you! The NFL has become a passing league. Having a head coach with innovative ways especially with a young QB & a young Team makes a lot of sense.

The Giants have spoken! They hired the right GM and now the right Head Coach IMHO. So proud of John Mara and Steve Tisch that they choose to move the Giants forward in a manner that will bring them into the modern NFL. I just want to see the Giants win! It's time for Schoen and Daboll to go to work!

John Mara's follow statement was so telling and so true:
“We’ve done everything possible to screw this kid (Daniel Jones) up since he’s been here. We keep changing coaches. Keep changing offensive coordinators. Keep changing offensive line coaches,” co-owner John Mara said at Schoen’s introductory press conference on Wednesday. “I take a lot of responsibility for that. Let’s bring in the right group of coaches now and give him some continuity and try to rebuild the offensive line and then be able to make it an intelligent evaluation of whether he can be the franchise quarterback or not.”

First, I hope Daniel Jones' neck injury heals and enables him to play next year. Having said that I can't wait for Daboll to work with Daniel Jones. He did a great job with Josh Allen. I believe he can do a great job with Daniel Jones. Will Jones ever be as good as Josh Allen. I have no idea. He can build on the play and potential Daniel Jones showed in 2019 though.

I read the tea leaves wrong, but that's OK.
